House of Israel
What does it mean as a member of the restored gospel to be part of the house of Israel? This is what I pondered as I created this piece. I love what the come follow me manual has to say about it, “being a part of the ‘house of Israel’ means that you have a covenant relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ… you are ‘meant to be a blessing.’” There is much symbolism in this piece but my favorite thing about it is that we find Jesus Christ at the center of it all. To me, being a member of the house of Israel means that I will strive to prove my faithfulness to Christ every day and honor his name.
If you want to delve a little deeper into some of the symbolism in this piece here are some helpful pointers. When looking at the painting you’ll notice 14 pains that depict different scenes. Each pain represents one of the tribes of Israel, they are arranged clockwise in order of age starting with Reuben (the mandrake) and ending with Benjamin (the wolf). Manasseh and Ephraim follow their father Joseph. It might be easy to guess who some of the images belong to while others might be a little trickier. Joseph, for instance, is represented by wheat, remember his dream? And the tribe of Ephraim is represented by an ox. Think of our temple fonts and the meaning behind the oxen while you read about some of the responsibilities of the tribe of Ephraim. I hope you enjoy searching for other hidden messages and symbols in this piece.
